Hiking - Walking: Levington Wind Direction: wsw Wind Stength: light Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: 10 Sea Temperature: Weather: cloudy Max Speed: Distance Covered: 3.10 n/mil (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
After seeing what we thought were waxwings yesterday while visiting some
friends clearing out their horses at a stables at Levington we decided to
go again today and see if we could confirm it :) So after breakfast at
Levington Marina with lapwings, turnstones, oyster catchers and redshanks
just outside the van :) We wrapped up warm and headed up the River Orwell
toward the Creek. With the tide high the birds that were there were close
to the bank. There were some annoying lbj's (little brown job) flitting
about in the grass and after talking to a couple of proper birdwatchers we
came to the conclusion that they were either pippets or twites - probably
pippets as I have never heard of twites !!! Then we had 26 avocets fly in
as the tide dropped, a great sight :) we then walked up the side of the
creek and out onto the road and up to the stables - sadly no waxwings but
we did see a woodpecker. It was then back to the road and on to the marina
road. We turned off into the woods just before the boats where we
disturbed a large herd of deer !!! we tried following but they stayed just
out of reach and we only got fleeting glimpses :( It was then back to the
van after over three hours out. A really nice walk even if the day was
mainly grey.
